Ethics: Huppets Try a Cover-Up

Over 1,000 Signal Approval of Convention Resolution

General President Schaitberger purchased a million dollar second home from a principal at SF&C Insurance Associates, a firm that does substantial business with the IAFF.

Such a purchase is a text book example of conflict of interest where someone’s judgement can be clouded by their private interests or transactions.

It’s also powerful evidence of poor judgment from the man tasked with setting the ethical example for the entire IAFF.

The huppets, a.k.a. IAFF executive board, gathered in a hush-hush meeting last week and were informed by Our Dear Leader himself that the way forward was for some of them to “investigate” the matter. Of course, they kowtowed before the emporer.

Conveniently, they have agreed in advance that there is no problem which would seem to invalidate their effort prior to its even beginning.

No Problem?

If there was no problem then why not call for a truly independent investigation? Hand the matter off to an impartial third party and have them render a report.

The problem is that there IS a problem. Harry and the Huppets are attempting to cover up the blatantly obvious making the severity of the issue worse.

They need a seance with Watergate’s Dick Nixon or a free consultation with his White House counsel John Dean.

Ironically, Schaitberger loves to say, “bad news does not get better with age.”

He should observe his own observation.

I Keep Forgetting, He’s Management

If we found out that a fire chief was blatantly manipulating outcomes to the detriment of our local members we would hit the roof.

Why should that be business as usual at the IAFF?

The IAFF is being run with unseemly management tactics because management is running our union.

The Death of MDA?

The huppets are even saying that passage of an ethics resolution at convention would spell the end of MDA fundraising.

Let’s get this right: putting our union ahead of private gain prevents us from raising money for Muscular Dystrophy research?

Seriously, where do they come up with this stuff?

We could accuse them of group think but it’s doubtful there is much think in that group.

It’s just as likely, nearly a sure thing, that the ethics resolution would increase MDA funds as opposed to reducing them.

Hello Pyongyang

The Executive Board has utterly failed their fundamental obligation to govern and oversee the IAFF.

They are nothing more than a cringing, boot-licking politburo worthy of service under North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.


Read the resolution below and ask yourself why any loyal IAFF member would oppose it.


52nd IAFF Convention Ethics Resolution

Whereas, the IAFF is nearing its 100th anniversary and continues as the essential safeguard for North America’s union fire fighters and paramedics; and

Whereas, our union suffers from unsound and unethical decision making, and

Whereas, the way to protect our union and ensure its viability is to commit union officers to a sound and commonsense ethical standard,

Be it therefore resolved that delegates seated at the 52nd IAFF Convention present for constitutional adoption the following ethical precepts:

International Association of Fire Fighters Ethics

(a)Union service is a sacred trust.Union officers have a responsibility to place loyalty to the IAFF Constitution and ethical principles above private gain. Every union officer must work to uphold the integrity of the IAFF. Every officer shall respect and adhere to the principles of ethical conduct set forth in this section.

(b)General principles. The following general principles apply to every union officer and form the basis for the standards contained in this part. Where a situation is not covered by the standards set forth in this part, union officers shall apply the principles set forth in this section in determining whether their conduct is proper.

(1) Union officers will place loyalty to the IAFF Constitution and ethical principles above private gain.

(2) Union officers shall not hold financial interests that conflict with the conscientious performance of duty.

(3) Union officers shall not engage in financial transactions using union information or allow the improper use of such information to further any private interest.

(4) A union officer shall not solicit or accept any gift or other item of monetary value from any person or entity seeking official action from, doing business with, or conducting activities with the IAFF, or whose interests may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the officer’s duties.

(5) Union officers shall put forth honest effort in the performance of their duties.

(6) Union officers shall not knowingly make unauthorized commitments or promises of any kind purporting to bind the IAFF.

(7) Union officers shall not use their office for private gain.

(8) Union officers shall act impartially and not give preferential treatment to any business, organization or individual.

(9) Union officers shall protect and conserve IAFF property and shall not use it for other than authorized activities.

(10) Union officers shall not engage in outside employment or activities, including seeking or negotiating for employment, that conflict with IAFF duties and responsibilities.

(11) Union officers shall disclose waste, fraud, abuse, and corruption to appropriate authorities.

(12) Union officers shall satisfy in good faith their obligations including all just financial obligations.

(13) Union officers shall take no action which directly or indirectly jeopardizes the Union’s health and safety advocacy role or the health and safety of IAFF members.

(14) Union officers shall endeavor to avoid any actions creating the appearance that they are violating the law or the ethical standards. Whether particular circumstances create an appearance that the law or these standards have been violated shall be determined from the perspective of a reasonable person with knowledge of the relevant facts.

Failure to adhere to these ethical principles will result in disciplinary action including trial board and loss of office.

    Kind of reminds me of Obama’s interview with O’Reilly. In regards to IRS investigation of Tea Party Groups “Not a smidgen of corruption.” Meanwhile, Lois Lerner is still pleading the Fifth while raking in 6 figure retirement off the Federal Teat (even though she waived the Fifth with her statement before the congressional committee). And Rhode’s email confirms what everyone with a half a brain has known all along. Trot out the video narrative to protect the Prez. Maybe it is time for Barry and Harry to compare notes.

    Eric, I agree with everything in your discussions. The shame of it is that this is the typical behavior of many that serve in trusted positions of organizations and/or government leaders. Did you watch 60 Minutes last night? Perfect example. I don’t trust any of them anymore!

    Please accept my official support of the ethics resolution for the IAFF 52nd Convention. Although I guess it is better than nothing (Union officers shall not use their office for public….blah, blah, blah.), your descriptions of the problem would leave one to believe the only fix is to replace Harry and the Huppets. Sign me up for that as well.

    Eric, do you think that if any of the IAFF Hazmat/WMD Instructors submitted this resolution that they would be summarily dismissed by Harold for being “Un-Loyal”?
    How many times have instructors been told that they are “just contractors”? Yes we were, but we were also dues paying IAFF Members for many years in most cases. At times, the IAFF Hdgs was the most non-union, union outfit I ever worked for, especially during the last few years and I hold Harold responsible for that. He was the Captain of that ship and I saw union brothers treated in a fashion that any of our locals would not have put up with from a fire chief or city official. Just my humble opinion as a former instructor with 25 years of service.
    YES, I support this resolution completely!
