Sri Lanka This and That

Some Parting Images

While it’s time to move onto Thailand I realized I still had some images I wanted to share.

A stack of brooms used to clean around the Jaya Sri Maha Bodi, the oldest human-planted tree in the world in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.IMG_0200

The ever familiar petal decoration adorning many famous buildings in DC and elsewhere though this one is from an ancient Buddhist Stupa.

The ubiquitous Asian cobra charmer reminding me of the IAFF’s ODL seen here with a monkey visible in the background representing the hapless board.

The rebuilt Jaffna public library, one-time repository of ancient Tamil texts, the burning of which started the bloody Sri Lankan civil war.

The “tuk-tuk” three-wheeler taxi seen here in Jaffna.  Sri Lankans have a special fondness for Che and Bob Marley, but then again, who doesn’t?

An obviously aspirational sign for the unlucky park visitor near Habarana.

A Sri Lankan firefighter with their tool for fighting brush fires, leather strips on the end of a stick.

Part of the tsunami memorial near Peraliya where thousands died in a train catastrophe caused by the immense waves.

The house where I stayed near there, devastated by the tsunami and since rebuilt.
