DC Gem, Revealed

Last week I posted this beautiful image asking for ideas where it might be located.

Today, the answer.

The Second Infantry Division is known as “Indianhead” or 2ID.

The Second was created in 1917 in France and fought at Belleau Wood, Chateau-Thierry, the Aisne and Saint Mihiel.

During WWII, they came ashore at Normandy and were at Ardennes.

In Korea, they broke out of the Pusan Perimeter, charging north all the way to the Manchurian border where they took part in the epic battle known as the Gauntlet.

Today, the Second defends the DMZ in Korea.

The memorial, dedicated in 1936 by President Roosevelt, sits in President’s Park near the intersection of Constitution Ave and 17th St., NW.

The flaming sword symbolizes the defense of Paris.
